Make your own ESG or sustainability profile

Allright, it’s about time to do something about it! Your client and your bank asked for it.

Where to start?

As a company you would like to show that you have a sustainable business model, this can be shown in your ESG profile. From the inside of the company some prefer to call this the CSR, the Corporate Social Responsibility.

It is about telling the world that you understand how you are impacted by the changes in the world around you, how you impact the world around you and finally how you deal with it to reduce the unwanted impacts from and on the world.

Constructing the ESG profile

Step 1 – The material ESG factors analyse

Fist of all you need to define what are the important and relevant ESG factors for your company. We often start this work on a sector level. These are the factors that you need to fully understand for your company and to manage. First of all you must understand the global mega trends that have an impact on you. Thereafter the countries and the sector you are exposed to have some characteristics that may represent both risk and opportunities. They way your company is organised will also have an impact on these.

Step 2 – The E, the S and the G analyse

In this part, with the factors in step one in mind, you run through the three groups of factors:

  • Environment – How is your consumption of resources, how polluting is your production process and how polluting are your products? And how do you deal with it?
  • Social – How is the characteristics of your internal organisation? and how do you deal with it to optimise it and see to that your employees are satisfied? What are the impacts of your business and organisation on your clients, suppliers, local communities and state agencies, etc? And how do you deal with is to ensure all stakeholders are taken care of?
  • Governance – How is your Board of Directors organised? Is the profile optimal for your business? Are governance priciples for good buiness respected?

Step3 – ESG profile conclusion

What are your main ESG risks and your main ESG opportunities? Is your business model sustainable or not? What are the strengths and the weaknesses?
